Text Box: NOTES FROM THE SWEEPSTAKES JUDGE: RAMONA BENSON It was a pleasure to see such excellent grooming, presentation and conditioning for all my puppies. Top lines, bites and tail sets were very good overall. Coats and all other head properties were good. Bone and body substance were fair. I would like to see more keel and back shelf and some stronger muzzles. Lay back of shoulders with reach and drive needs more improvement. It is important to me for a Scottie to be able to move well around the ring, maybe it comes from years of showing halter and performance horses. When I say well, I do not mean run, but moving at a brisk walk and covering ground. The overall quality of my entries was very good and my negative points are only in the interest of bettering the breed. If you weren’t one of my winners, just remember that there is always another show tomorrow with another judge, but never lose sight of trying to breed the best Scottie you can. My Best in Sweeps was a powerful young dog exhibiting the breed type that I appreciate. He filled my eye the second he entered the ring and never looked back. My Best Opposite in Sweeps was a bitch that had a lovely body, but needed a little sparring to come into herself on the day. Sparring is at the discretion of the judge and is a tool that should be used wisely. My Best of Opposite showed a beautiful spar and was rewarded for it. I would like to thank my amazing Ring Stewards, Ms. Pamela Offutt and Ms. Lani McKennon. They expertly assembled my entries, kept my clipboard handy and were prompt with ribbons and trophies, which enabled me to focus on judging. It was truly a pleasure to have judged at the Sweeps and I thank you all again for my assignment and the wonderful entry.
